The Tracks We Wore Out

d056facb9a0b9881ba31179ea8d4c320387845aa_m

Pitchfork just (somewhat prematurely) released their list of the top 500 tracks of the decade as part of their ongoing P2K: The Decade in Music series. But I guess someone had to kick off the end of the decade lists that are sure to start permeating our lives starting now. Regardless, it’s quite a feat for anyone to take on. When these things do inevitable come around, I love to turn them into playlists for my own bizarre entertainment. You see, I love lists, of any kind really. And these are my favorite kind. So I thought I’d take my playlist of Pitchfork’s top 50 tracks of the decade and put them up here. I’m sure someone will come along and put up all 500 somewhere, but that level of obsessiveness is for another fool to deal with. Enjoy.

Earth Day

josh-keyes-deer-sidewalk1

Today is Earth Day, the one day a year elementary school kids are made to show their “green-ness” through poster competitions. You can show your support for Mother Earth in whatever way you please now that you’ve surpassed a 4th grade education. Maybe ride a bike, sing with the birds, or actually throw something in your recycling bin? To help get you in the mood, I’ve put together a little playlist of bands/songs who’s titles at least are directly inspired by all things natural. And if you’re interested in making every day Earth Day, Mr. Father Earth himself, Robert Redford, tells you how… Making Every Day Earth Day (Huffington Post)

Animal Cracked Out

animal-crack

This right here is a test pressing of the new 3LP box set, Animal Crack Box, from Animal Collective of live material that was “recorded live to MiniDisc at various locations over the course of the course of the first three years or so of the band.” Right now it’s up for auction on eBay for charity by the Catsup Plate label it’s being released on.

from the Ebay listing:

“We never know what to do with test pressings here at Catsup Plate. Fairly soon after we approve them we have commercial copies of the record, so the test pressing usually go into a box somewhere. Save them for the grandkids or something like that.

For our upcoming 3LP boxed set of live and unreleased Animal Collective music, entitled Animal Crack Box, we’ve decided to do something a bit more positive with a set of the test pressings and offer them up for auction with 100% of proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, a Nobel Peace Prize winning medical humanitarian organization who do a tremendous job in offering impartial and non-political help to victims of violence, neglect, or catastrophe around the world.”

Some obvious favorites from their expanding catalog:

Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes [from the Merriweather Post Pavillion LP]

Animal Collective – No More Runnin [from the Merriweather Post Pavillion LP]

Animal Collective – Street Flash [from the Water Curses EP]

Animal Collective – For Reverend Green [from the Strawberry Jam LP]

Animal Collective – Fireworks [from the Strawberry Jam LP]

Animal Collective – Who Could Win A Rabbit [ from the Sung Tongs LP]

A while ago Mr. Bradford Cox of Deerhunter had his friends in Animal Collective make some micromixes for his blog. Here’s the results:

Avey Tare Micromix

Panda Bear Micromix

And to overload this post just enough on this band that in my opinion keeps getting better and better, check out this video of the now classic My Girls

I fell asleep in the sun

summer-swings1

I’ve been in a very summery music mood lately.. as you may have noticed. I can feel spring coming in the air and am doing all I can to make it feel like summer in my head. The band Air France has helped me do this better than anyone else. But with only two EPs to their name, I’ve been searching for anything else they’ve had their hands in. They don’t do many remixes, but the ones they do have their signature sound all over them. They’ll do just fine for now…

Au Revior Simone – Afraid You Told Someone About Us (Air France Remix)

Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy (Air France Remix)

And a few other things that help trick your brain into summer mode..

but if these don’t work, drink like five mojitos and try again:

The Avalanches – Summer Crane

From the Since I Left Your LP

High Place – The Storm

From the High Place LP

Animal Collective – Grass

From the Feels LP

The Tough Alliance – Lucky

From the Neo Violence 7″

Saint Etienne – Only Love Can Break Your Heart

From the London Conversations LP

School of Seven Bells – Face to Face on High Places

From the Alpinisms Lp

Jamie Lidell – Wait For Me

From the Jim LP

The Supremes – Automatically Sunshine

From the Gold LP

Santogold – Your Voice

Take Away Shows

The Take Away Shows have been around for a while thanks to the French music blog La Blagotheque, but every time I see a new one I fall in love with them again. Stylistically, they’re exactly what I want. That’s all thanks to the mastermind and primary filmer Vincent Moon. I thought I’d share some of my favorites… but there are so many more with artists like Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Jens Lekman, Sufjan Stevens, and there’s even one with Jason Mraz!!!

Stick it to the funk

b8a172_fullsize

In a funk because it’s Tuesday and your 3 day weekend is over and you’re staring at a computer screen and 40 degrees isn’t nearly as warm as it should be and your eyes won’t stop bleeding? I have the cure! A musical spectrum’s worth of high energy tunes to recharge your human batteries. Turn it up and make your ears bleed too.
