To you:

Picture 9

It’s been a rad summer here in Philadelphia. We’ve been living, laughing, loving, and all the other L words that you do during summer. And now we’ve reached our 200th post at The Daily Rag. I appreciate all of you loyal readers, however often you come visit us. There’s lots of change in the air. New seasons, birthdays, new jobs, new leases on life, but no matter what changes, we’ll still be holdin’ it down here at our online home.

There’s also some exciting things in the works for our fair blog: year end/decade end lists, new contributors and new dope shit for your eyes and ears. Hopefully you enjoy what you find here and continue to come back.

As a little personal thank you to all of you, this is a mix I’ve been listening to myself for the last couple weeks. There’s stuff on it i’ve already posted, and stuff I haven’t. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I’ve been. Thanks again! Have an amazing weekend!

Beck’s Record Club

Beck+10

We’ve always know Beck to be a mad scientist, but he’s finally let us in on the tinkering that goes on in his laboratory. Mr. Hansen has started his quite ambitious Record Club experiment based out of his home recording studio.

For lack of a better explanation of what Record Club is exactly, I’ll let the man himself explain it as he does on his website:

“For those new to the Record Club, it is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. An album is chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework. Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes documenting what happened over the course of a day. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren’t familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions.”

The first edition of Record Club is the definition of ambitious and ballsy. The players for this first go round chose The Velvet Underground’s Velvet Underground & Nico. Wow. And as you might expect, it’s a bit hodge podge, but seriously fun to listen to and watch.

The songs are being released as videos on his website. One song per week, though they are all recorded in a day. The impromptu band put together for the recording of the VU classic includes Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and from Iceland, special guest Thorunn Magnusdottir, and of course Beck.

The second project from Record Club is Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Leonard Cohen and includes Devendra Banhart, MGMT, Binki Shapiro, etc. So far two of that album’s songs have been released to the site.

Check out it out for yourself, and dream of what your life could be like if you too were part of Beck’s scene (as I too have been doing).

And if anyone can find this as mp3’s, please let me know.

This Sunday: Making Time Pool Party w/ !!!

778245ea5ac1f1894243eb0d9cfdc1cd2d378496_m

This Sunday, Sept. 6th will be the last installment of this summer’s Making Time Pool Parties with !!! (Chk Chk Chk) as well as resident djs Dave P and Mike Z etc. However, it will not be held at the ‘flying W’ pool out in Jersey, but will be at Bamboo Bar on Delaware Ave over by The Barbary. !!! is a great party band. Should be a good time with plenty of bad hipster dancing. Bamboo Bar actually has their own pool, but if that gets too crowded, I recommend jumping into the Delaware. The flyer’s after the break. $10 cover.

Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do!

n1156860120_30056067_542

These two unassuming dudes pretty much do whatever they want. And that’s good for us, because it’s usually fun as shit. Diplo and Switch‘s new album as Major Lazer came out this week and it’s insane. But in a good way. And tomorrow night will hopefully be equally as insane as they’re set to perform in their hometown here in Philly. It’s a FREE(!!!) show at the Electric Factory with A-Trak. If you haven’t already signed up for your ticket, DO IT NOW!!! RIGHT HERE.

Love is All

l_f488a68bbf1f24974037348446ec704d

These Swedish scenesters are dropping their post-punk + sax sounds on Philly tonight at KFN. I’ve been interested in seeing Love is All live for some time now so the fact that they’ll be at a bar four blocks from my house is maybe fate. And who doesn’t love a band with a cute yelping female singer. Should be a good time.

These Dudes Are Bad Ass

kari_ferrell_hipster_grifter_beard_tattoo

The World Beard and Moustache Championship starts today in Alaska. These guys are serious about their “craft”. If Kari Farrell (whose now infamous tattoo is pictured above) were still on the lam, we’d know exactly where to find her.

Torture Memos Monthly

boycottinky

So I’m still new here in Philly and am quite loyal to the New York Times. I don’t pick it up with the regularity that I did while living in NY, but I still buy a physical copy when I can, and their website is my home page. It pays to be an informed citizen.

But seeing as I’m now a Philadelphian, I’ve been weighing what paper to start picking up so I know what’s going on in this city.

Seems like the Philadelphia Inquirer is trying to make my choice easier. As of Sunday, the Inquirer has enlisted a new monthly columnist, John Yoo. You may have heard that name before. Yoo is none other than the top Bush administration lawyer that authored the famous “torture memos” that paved the way for that administration to torture detainees at Guantanamo and elsewhere.

Unless his new column is called “Torture Memos”, I don’t think anything he writes at this point is worth the paper it’s written on, let alone the time it takes to read it.

I’m not really one for pushing causes or personal beliefs on anyone, but this just seems like a no brainer, and a ridiculously bad move for the Inquirer. So for myself, I’ll be staying as far away from that paper as I can, and I encourage everyone else to make their own informed decision.

Get your own boycott the Philadelphia Inquirer badge (up top) from Philebrity.

Will Bunch of the Daily News is also all over this. Worth a read.
