The National

Matt Berninger and The National make some of the best ‘stuck in your head, in and out of love, train wreck’ music I’ve ever heard. And I should know, as I have basically mastered the same subject. The lyrics and music have the raw vulnerability of a still open wound, not yet clean. But if you don’t feel like getting too deep with it, their songs can just be a great melody, a hook and a moody soundtrack for a summer night’s ride.

From the Boxer LP:

The National – Green Gloves

The National – Apartment Story

The National – Start A War

From the Alligator LP:

The National – Baby We’ll Be Fine

The National – Daughters of the Soho Riots

The National – Karen

From the Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers LP:

The National – Cardinal Song

The National – 90 Mile Water Wall

The National – Lucky You

And seeing as both Bryce and Aaron Dessner are members of The National as well as pseudo-curators of the excellent Dark Was the Night charity compilation out earlier this year, here’s their contribution to that effort as both audio and visual delights (via Pitchfork.tv):

The National – So Far Around the Bend

Deer Tick

I saw these guys when they opened for Phosphorescent a few weeks back at Johnny Brenda’s. They tore it up and had the crowd in the palm of their hands. I took notice. I’ve since been soaking in their album War Elephant, released in 2007. Overall, it’s pretty decent country tinged indie rock with shades of early Modest Mouse and The National, and there are a few gems that pop up throughout. They also have a new album dropping in June called Born on Flag Day. A very Springsteen-esque title.

good deeds

There’s two pretty excellent charity comps out recently. Dark Was the Night (A Red Hot Compilation) amassed quite a collection of exclusives tracks by the likes of Grizzly Bear, The Arcade Fire, Yeasayer, Spoon, Feist, Bon Iver, Cat Power, Sharon Jones, The National, etc. Sales benefit the Red Hot Organization which is a charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS. The Album is being released by 4AD.

Grizzly Bear & Feist – Service Bell

Spoon – Well-Alright

Yeasayer – Tightrope

The second comp is a bit more interesting. The War Child Organization asked some of the most revered artist in the last centure of music to pick one of their classics and a current band to cover it. Some of the resulting pairings are inspired:

Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City – The Hold Steady

David Bowie’s Heroes – TV on the Radio

Stevie Wonder’s Superstition – Estelle

The Ramones’ Sheena is a Punk Rocker – The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The proceeds from this album go to work with children affected by war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and is being released by EMI.

Both are worthy causes for you to drop some cash on and get some great music in return. Just a thought.

Take Away Shows

The Take Away Shows have been around for a while thanks to the French music blog La Blagotheque, but every time I see a new one I fall in love with them again. Stylistically, they’re exactly what I want. That’s all thanks to the mastermind and primary filmer Vincent Moon. I thought I’d share some of my favorites… but there are so many more with artists like Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Jens Lekman, Sufjan Stevens, and there’s even one with Jason Mraz!!!
