Going from Godspeed style ambiance with hushed vocals to My Bloody Valentine era walls of noise with chest rattling choruses in the same song sounds like a disastrous study in combining opposing forces. But on The Antlers new album Hospice, they pull it off without a hitch, and it is EPIC. To my ear, it’s one of the only albums I’ve heard in a while that emits a palpably cohesive atmosphere that you want to wrap around your head. And then there’s these sporadically used horns that just throw this extra level of sheen on top of it all. Definitely one of the best albums of the summer, but I can’t wait to listen to it on a cool fall night.
